Crowns and Bridges

Crowns

Dental fillings have their limitations and cannot be used in all situations, particularly when a tooth has extensive damage or an awkward shape. Dental crowns are designed to cover over the whole tooth, and restore the tooth to its original shape. They can be used to protect broken down or brittle teeth, or enhance the appearance of severely discoloured teeth. Dental crowns are also recommended following root canal treatment to protect the dehydrated brittle tooth structure. Crowns give back strength, function, and aesthetic appearance to damaged teeth.

We can crown your tooth using a number of different materials: porcelain, porcelain bonded to metal, gold or Zirconia (reinforced glass). If Dr. Malloch determines the best way to repair your tooth is with a dental crown, he will take the time to carefully discuss your options and make recommendations for the material that will look, function, and feel the best for your smile.

Bridges

If you are missing one or two teeth in a row, we may recommend a dental bridge to restore your smile. A dental bridge is anchored in place through the use of two dental crowns, which are bonded onto the teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. These crowns hold the artificial tooth in place permanently, and do not come out like a denture. Bridges have been used in dentistry for hundreds of years, and are a reliable way to replace missing teeth. While implants have become more popular in the last few decades, bridges are still a viable option, and are, in most cases, less expensive than implants. There are many issues that should be considered when you are deciding how to replace a missing tooth. Come in for a consultation to decide which method is best for you.
